14-year-old Dutch sailor Laura Dekka who is aiming to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world says she has reached Spain's Canary Islands off but declined to say exactly where she was. In an email to The Associated Press, Dekker said she would not specify where she was for fear of attracting the press. She also said she did not know how long she would stay in the Canary Islands. The trip has been shrouded in secrecy since the start. Dekker has also sold exclusive TV rights to her voyage to a Dutch media company. Laura's website features links titled "My Coordinates" and "Where is Laura," but neither was working when I last visited the site, I also walked round our local marina, Corralejo, here in Fuerteventura but sorry I could not see her, so no scoop for World Marine Guide. As we reported on the 23rd August she is expects to stay in the Canaries while waiting for the Atlantic Hurricane season to end. During her stay she will be able to catch up on her schoolwork, receive family visits and install cameras on her yacht for a film to be made of the voyage, she is also considering a trip home. In this issue we take a look at the popular east coast resort of Caleta de Fuste known to the locals as Castillo because of the 18th century fort that can be seen by the harbour. The name Caleta de Fuste literally translated means the Cove of the Fuste and Fuste is the term for an old wooden sailing ship one of which used to be anchored in the cove. To cater for the many tourists a man made beach has been put around the cove and a series of lagoons have been built which have bars and restaurants on the small islands. A short distance to the south of the commercial centre is the salt museum Las Salinas. Every Saturday there is an open air craft and trinket market held where you can try your bargaining skills. For the tourists and locals there are plenty of bars and restaurants which provide a varied choice of food and nightlife with many of the hotels also providing free entertainment. Barbequing is a great way to cook For many the thought of cooking on a BBQ just spells a disaster waiting to happen, but with Fuerteventura’s sunny climate it is a popular way to cook and dine. Try the recipe below if you are a novice to the “Old Barbie” and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to produce a great meal and Wow the guests. BBQ Beef Back RibsRibs are always a popular BBQ Dish and the following recipe is simple. Serves 4-6 persons. Ingredients • 3 Beef Back Racks (whole) • Pepper • 2 tbsp Tomato Ketchup • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce • 2 tbsp Molasses, Honey or Golden Syrup • 1 tsp Tabasco • Marinade • 3 tbsp Lemon Juice • 3 tbsp Olive Oil ½ tsp Chilli Powder • 3 tsp salt • Take the ribs and cut down between the bones, but not all the way through. • Rub the salt all over the racks. • Combine the garlic, lemon juice, oil and chilli and brush the mixture over the racks. Cover with foil and leave to marinade in the fridge for one hour. Now prepare the BBQ glaze by combining the rest of the ingredients and Set aside. • Before you cook the racks, allow them to come to room temperature. • Barbecue the racks on a gas or charcoal grill over a medium heat for approx. 60-90 minutes. • During the last 15-20 minutes, regularly brush the glaze onto the ribs. Once cooked, remove from the grill and cover with foil. Corralejo, Fuerteventura is to get a new Botanical garden situated next to the new Guadia Civil police station. The project is being carried out by Syocsa-inarsa.es at a cost of €1,000,000 and is due for completion in December 2010. The site has long been earmarked as a public garden and work is well underway with a spokesman for the constructers saying that the garden was on schedule for the target completion date. Laura is now sailing in fine weather off northwest Africa, her manager Peter Klarenbeek said "The first 48 hours of Laura's voyage have gone smoothly. Everything is going well. She's very happy," Klarenbeek said Dekker plans to spend at least two months in the marinas in the Canary Islands 1,380 kilometers (858 miles) away waiting for the Atlantic Hurricane season to end before setting off to cross the Atlantic by Cape Verde for the Caribbean. While in the Canaries she will catch up on her schoolwork, receive family visits and install cameras on her yacht for a film to be made of the voyage, Klarenbeek said. After the Canary Islands Dekker intends to head south to the Cape Verde Islands off west Africa before continuing to the Caribbean on a trip expected to last a year or more. The schoolgirl plans to stop at dozens of ports and may even return home to catch up on her studies before resuming her trip. The creation and restoration of the footpaths on island of Lobos , in the Canary Islands,has nearly been completed after six months work at a cost of 290,000 Euros. This also includes the restoration of the salt flats, the rebuilding of three lime kilns and six wells. The footpaths will now be integrated into the of paths on Fuerteventura that stretch from the north to the south of the island. The only remaining work needed to be done is some signage and a footbridge to provide access to the salt flats across the lagoon. Ryanair, the cheap flight airline, have announced three more new routes to Fuereventura, Canary Islands. Two twice weekly flights will connect with Luton and Edinburgh and a weekly service to Cork, Ireland. The Councillor for Tourism, Agueda Montelongo, said we hope to be able to announce further new connections to mainland Spain with Ryanair. Theses latest flights will increase the number of seats available to Fuerteventura to 6,500 per week giving UK and Irish property owners on the island a greater choice of scheduled flights.
