Focus On Caleta de Fuste
In this issue we take a look at the popular east coast resort of Caleta de Fuste known to the locals as Castillo because of the 18th century fort that can be seen by the harbour. The name Caleta de Fuste literally translated means the Cove of the Fuste and Fuste is the term for an old wooden sailing ship one of which used to be anchored in the cove. Over the years the town has become known by other names just to confuse tourists, so if you hear it being called Caleta de Fuste, Caleta, El Castillo and most recently Costa Caleta be aware it is the same place!
Caleta is ideally situated just a 10 minute drive from Fuerteventura's capital, Puerto del Rosario, and 5 minutes from the Islands airport. Also being about halfway along the coast the fantastic beaches of the north and the south of the island are easily accessible as is the more rugged west coast.
The resort with its many hotels and apartments is reasonably new and has all the services and attractions that you would expect. To cater for the many tourists a man made beach has been put around the cove and a series of lagoons have been built which have bars and restaurants on the small islands. The harbour and marina is a haven for small craft and provides tourists and locals alike with deep-sea fishing, boat trips, diving, windsurfing, etc. For more information on Canarian marinas and harbours go to www.worldmarineguide.com
There are two excellent18 hole golf courses both offering driving ranges, putting greens, pro shops and of course a 19th hole. More information on these courses and others on the island can be found on www.golffuerteventura.com . Close by is The Atlantico Centre which houses a cinema, bowling alley, shops, restaurants, a large Euro Spar supermarket and plenty of free parking. A short distance to the south of the commercial centre is the salt museum Las Salinas.
Every Saturday there is an open air craft and trinket market held where you can try your bargaining skills. For the tourists and locals there are plenty of bars and restaurants which provide a varied choice of food and nightlife with many of the hotels also providing free entertainment. Caleta de Fuste is a charming resort which meets the needs of the old and young, the active and the not so active or the undecided.
