Spain And The Canary Islands Are the UK's Favourite Holiday Destination

Fly to let owners with properties in Spain have seen an increase in tourism during the first three months of this year although those using privately owned or family homes fell by 0.5 percent according to figures from the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

The statistics published by the Frontur opinion poll showed that nine million international tourists visited the country in Q1 which represents an increase of 2.9 percent over the same period last year.

Property website kyero.com reports that particularly noticeable were the increases in tourists from the Netherlands (22.3 percent), Belgium (20 percent), Switzerland (14.8 percent), Scandinavia (11.7 percent) and Italy (10.9 percent).

However, the UK remained Spain’s number one market, with 1.8 million tourists (albeit a decrease of 4.8 percent from 2010), followed by Germany with 1.47 million (3.7 percent less), and France with 1.2 million (2.7 percent more than last year).

The Canary Islands was the most popular destination and attracted 2.7 million of all international tourists in the first quarter, an increase of 15.2 percent over the same period last year. Fuerteventura showed the largest increase in visitors of all the Canarian islands

This was followed by Catalonia, with just over two million tourists, or 22.9 percent of all arrivals, but still a decrease of 1.1 percent over the first quarter of 2010.
Andalusia, in third place, accounted for 13.6 percent of arrivals, or 1.23 million passengers, and 0.9 percent less than last year.

The popular city of Madrid attracted 894,628 tourists, a 0.1 percent increase, while Valencia recorded an increase of 3 percent, to 825,403 tourists.

The Balearic Islands, another popular destination for Brits, registered a decrease in tourist visits of 11.8 percent.

Most travellers (79.9 percent) chose to fly to Spain, which was 3.4 percent more than in the first quarter from the same period of 2010, while tourists travelling by road increased by 1.3 percent to 17.4 percent.

Beat The Bunker Shot, Golf Tips From Las Playitas Golf, Fuerteventura

Most medium to high handicap golfers don’t like bunker shots and many of you admit defeat before even entering one but tour pro’s and low handicap players love bunkers shots and many would prefer certain sand shots to a long putt. With a positive and fearless attitude everyone can improve every shot they play.

There are certain very important points we need to learn first before tackling the sand shot; first of all read the shot like you would a putt and try to imagine where you want the ball to land, then study the sand itself, all courses are different so establish your footing by nestling into the sand which will also give you an idea of it’s depth and texture. If it is hard packed sand use a club with less bounce and play it like a soft greenside lob shot or putt it out it possible. With soft fine sand like we have at Las Playitas in Fuerteventura you need a club with more bounce and you need to hit the sand well behind the ball.

I believe grip pressure is very important for the bunker shot and I teach my pupils to hold the club with about 50% of the pressure we use in a normal golf shot- i.e. very light in the fingers.

Ball position can vary depending on the shot, a high, lofted shot with an open stance (this encourages a slicing motion) will be more forwards towards the front foot but a standard only slightly open bunker shot should be more towards the middle with a touch more weight on left foot – experiment and figure out what is best for you.

The most important thing to remember is to hinge the wrists on the back swing and follow through to a high finish while holding the face of the club open - if you quit on the shot then you’ve got no chance!

Remember with a bunker shot your not realistically trying to hole it unlike a long putt or even a chip so getting the ball onto the green and accepting two putts but occasionally achieving one should be satisfactory to most golfers – follow the above advice and you’ll increase your chances of a precious sand save.

Focus On Betancuria On The Island Of Fuerteventura

Betancuria is situated in a picturesque valley high up in the islands mountain range also known as Betancuria. The valley is very fertile and produces a greener, softer feel to the area compared to other parts of the island.

Fuerteventura was conquered for the House of Castile by Juan de Bethencourt, a French seafarer, between 1402 and 1417 and Betancuria was named after the sailor and established as the islands capital in 1404. His banner is now preserved in the town museum.

The reason for the location of the capital was because of the tortuous journey to reach the town which protected it from frequent pirate attacks on the island, although in 1593 the pirate Jaban reached and attacked Betancuria and reduced everything including the Santa Maria church to a pile of rubble and ash. The church was not rebuilt until 1691 and little remains of the original apart from the bells. Fuerteventura was not the only Canary Island to be attacked by Pirates

The town remained the islands capital until 1834 when eventually Puerto de Cabras, or Puerto del Rosario as it is known today, became Fuerteventura’s Capital. The town is still the capital of the municipality of Betancuria and because of its historical importance is now a National Park.

On the main street running through the town is the Casa Museo Arquebiologico, flanked by cannons. The building contains a collection of important archaeological finds including farming tools, fertility idols, and articles of everyday life of this ancient people. Some of the old local handicrafts can still be seen today with a visit to the 'Casa Santa Maria' where you can watch the crafts men and artists at work and purchase some of the hand made products from the local shop.

Betancuria's income comes mainly from day visitors. The church which has now been fully restored is open to the public from 10am until 6pm and there's also a church museum. Most of the property in the town is typical of Canarian design.

The climb up to Betancuria is still as torturous as it was in the days of the pirate Jaban, but today with modern air-conditioned coaches the long mountain road is much easier to travel and the views over Fuerteventura from the top are breathtaking and well worth the journey.

El Hierro, In The Canary Islands, Set To Become The Worlds First Self Sufficient Land Mass

At the moment, the project that will transform the future of El Hierro doesn't look like much more than a hole in the ground. Or two, to be exact: one on top of a mountain, another smaller one down below, and in between, a long stretch of pipeline tinted the same color as the scrub that grows so abundantly on this volcanic island. But when this innovative wind-power system goes online at the end of 2011, it will turn El Hierro, the easternmost of Spain's Canary Islands, into the first inhabited landmass in the world to become completely energy self-sufficient. And that's just the first step in a plan that may make the island the most sustainable place on Earth.

Sound ambitious? Consider the source. El Hierro is located over 750 miles (1,200 km) from the Spanish mainland, and its stark, volcanic landscape harbors no coal or fossil fuels. Fresh water is scarce, and for electricity, its population of 10,000 has long depended on the diesel brought in weekly by tanker. Which is why, some 25 years ago, the islanders began thinking about ways to convert to renewable energy, using the two resources that they actually have a lot of: wind and water. Now, with oil supplies dwindling worldwide and the Fukushima disaster offering an all-too-present reminder of the perils of nuclear energy, El Hierro's hydro-eolic plant looks positively prescient.

"At first, it was simply an issue of becoming more self-sufficient," says Tomas Padrón, president of the Island Council, whose role is similar to that of a mayor's. "We were completely dependent on outside deliveries and could be cut off at a moment's notice. But then with the global-energy crisis, and climate change, and everything else that's happened, we've realized it has a lot more value."

El Hierro is pushing ahead faster than its larger neighbours, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma and La Gomera who all have theira green agendas, Fuerteventura was recently awarded UNESCO Bio Sphere recognition.

The future power station is at once a marvel of engineering and remarkably simple in its design. Five windmills on the northeastern end of the island will power a pumping station that, when the wind is blowing, will drive water 2,300 feet uphill, from a small, 5 million-cubic-foot (150,000-cu-m) reservoir down by the shore to a larger, 19 million-cubic-foot (550,000-cu-m) reservoir snuggled into one of the island's volcanic craters. When the wind abates, water from the top depository will be released, along 1.8 miles (3 km) of mostly camouflaged pipes, into the bottom one, and the pressure of that falling water will drive six hydraulic turbines. In other words, El Hierro will combine the two resources in which it abounds to deliver a continuous supply of electricity, no matter the weather. "If we don't want to depend on fossil fuel, we have to have steady input and output," says Gonzalo Piernavieja, director of research and development for the Technological Institute of the Canaries, which designed the plant. "And the only way to do that is through massive storage. In this case, we're using nature's gifts, wind and sea water, for storage."

The plant is expected to produce 48 GW/h (gigawatt hours), enabling El Hierro to conserve some 6,000 tons of diesel per year, and to meet 100% of its energy needs by 2015. And by that time, the island will be well into its next sustainability projects. One of them, already underway, is a plan convert all 4,500 of El Hierro's cars to electric; the same municipal company, Gorona del Viento, that is building the new hydroeolic station will supply car batteries powered by excess energy from the plant. "The whole system will be integrated," says Javier Morales, El Hierro's councilman for sustainability. "It's beyond green. When the power plant and the car system interact, it will be like galaxies colliding."

And that's not all that will be integrated. Unlike most of the other islands in the Canaries archipelago, which have staked their economies on mass tourism, El Hierro remains largely agricultural (pineapples and mangos are its primary exports). Its farmers too are looking ahead: all of the island's agricultural cooperatives have signed on to a plan that will convert their fields to organic production in the next eight years. And those farms, in turn, will be connected to a "biodigester" that converts sewage into both methane (which can then be used as fuel) and fertilizer.

How did a place so small that it lacks a movie theater and so culturally conservative that it still frowns upon unaccompanied women in bars come up with such a revolutionary plan for the future? Thank geography, says Island Council president Padrón. "We've always been doubly isolated, first from mainland Spain, and then from the rest of the Canaries," he says. "And we've always had problems with drought and with supplying ourselves. It makes us look harder for solutions."

But if El Hierro's problems are particular, its solutions don't have to be, say officials. "Absolutely this technology can be applied elsewhere," says Morales about the power station, whose upper reservoir is currently being lined with massive sheets of PVC in preparation for the first water pumping. "Hawaii, for example. We're already advising them." That's something that another volcanic archipelago, notably larger but perhaps newly aware of the limits of conventional energy, might want to look into

Airline Flight capacity is set to hit record levels by the end of this month, according to new figures released by OAG, a data and analysis provider for the aviation industry.

Why the pound in your pocket is disappearing.

The last 3 weeks or so has seen the pound trade against the euro eadrom lows of 1.129 to a high of 1.1650 which has quite an impact on any money you transfer. Pretty good news though if you are sending your money back to the UK . The recent change in rates means that if you are transferring a £1000 insteadof getting around 1150 euros you will probably receive today around 1120 euros, it doesnt sound a great deal but multiply by 12 and all of a sudden you have lost at least 360 euros per year.

Now why is is happening?

You have no doubt read quite a bit about all the problems in the Eurozone, not least recently with Portugal having to go cap in hand to the ECB and IMF for a bailout and the rumour mill still persists that Spain will follow. Nobody is too sure if this will happen, what we do know is that Spain certainly is trying to manage its economy in a far stronger way than Portugal had been. It has introduced a string of measures to tackle the problem by increasing taxes etc and it hopes to avoid non repayment of its debt.

-The interesting time will come at the end of ths month when its due to pay back interest on funds raised earlier.

Whilst much has been said about the eurozone the UK has unfortunately been creaking a little and ocassionally this goes unnoticed by the general public although a quick look at the rates of exchange will confirm all is not right in the UK.

Consumer confidence is low, retailers have been issuing various profit warnings and just recently have announced the lowest March retail figures for a considerable time. Manufacturing sector is also showing concerns due to the increase in raw material costs. Add this to the poor housing sector with an insufficient number of new mortgage applications and you start to answer, why the pound is performing so poorly.

Generally people in the UK are attempting to pay off their debt as they are concerned about the possibilty of interest rate hikes and the impact on their pockets, they are paying off debt rather than incurring it . Of late eyes have also been focussed on the UK banking sector as the Independent Commission will soon publish its report on the Banking sector.

The aim will be to ensure the British taxpayer will not have to bail out the banks in the event of another crisis. One of the views is that It appears the banks will have to ring fence customer savings and deposits from any high risk future investments. Further far reaching proposals will be included so keep your eyes open for the publication of this report.

With the recent interest rate hike in the Eurozone and the concerns in

America it is clear that investors have an appetite for the euro hence the

additional reason for its strength as it at the moment the favoured

currency. Against the dollar it has recorded recent highs of 1.4490 and

the probabilty of going beyond this figure is not that far away.

From sterling's point of view in late February, nothing has really changed from its position in late November against the euro, the Australian dollar and the Canadian dollar. The pound has strengthened by three yen, four US cents and six New Zealand cents. Among the major currencies it has only lost ground to the Swiss franc where it is down by six cents.
The Swiss franc's gains are down to nervousness among investors. They worry about Portugal going down the same path as Greece and Ireland moving towards sovereign bankruptcy. The recent bond auction in Portugal will be the last, the next step will be cap in hand to the IMF and nobody really wants that
And they are worrying now about Australia and New Zealand. The pound has achieved a substantial recovery this year against the Aussie and Kiwi dollars following natural disasters there; flooding in Australia and earthquakes in New Zealand. It looks as though both countries' economies will stagnate in the first part of 2011.
Concerns about America are more entrenched. By the end of its 'quantitative easing' programme, the Federal Reserve will have printed some 2.6 trillion dollars. What happens when it stops the printing in June? Will the States follow Greece and Ireland into receivership? Maybe not, but the unease lingers.
Sterling is currently feeling the benefit of investors' belief that interest rates will head higher this year. The Bank of England argues, perfectly reasonably, that at least half the current 4% inflation rate is down to two things: high oil prices and January's increase in the standard rate of VAT. Critics say the Bank is neglecting its duty to keep inflation at 2%. The pressure on the Bank to be seen to be doing something is growing. It looks likely that rates will go up this year though not by much and that the anticipation should support sterling.

Finally the worry now is about the rash of revolution spreading across North Africa and the Middle East. The potential impact upon global economies if we continue to see oil price increases although thankfully as I write the oil price has shown a slight decrease.

Focus On Jandia And Morro Jable

Morro Jable in the south of Fuerteventura used to be a sleepy fishing village until it was discovered by German tourists and now the towns of Morro Jable and Jandia have grown so much that it is difficult to discern where one ends and the other begins. This area of the islands coast is known as Costa Calma, as it is for the most part protected from the prominent northerly winds, and has some of the best beaches in the world to the north and south of the town. The stunning Cofete beach lies to the south, but the road that leads to it is unmade and so an off road type of car is preferable, though once there you will have miles of golden sand virtually to yourself. If you prefer a bit more action from your beach try Sotovento beach to the north famous for the annual world wind surfing championships held there. If you are not a wind surfing champion don’t worry there is a school for the novices.

In the evening the resort lights up and there is an amazing selection of bars and restaurants to either relax after an exhausting day on some of the best beaches in the Canary Islands or provide entertainment well into the small hours .

Spanish And Canary Island Property Continues to Regain Popularity in 2011

The number of searches for Spanish property in January this year was 37.05% higher than last year according to overseas property portal Homesgofast.

According to the portal the trend that has been noted since the Spanish property market imploded; namely the dominance of the Balearics and Canary Islands, property market not only continued in January but became even more pronounced. One third of all enquiries into Spanish properties were for those islands according to the portal.

"It's interesting to see how Spain despite the bad press is still very attractive to overseas buyers considering retiring or buying a second home abroad," said Nick Marr, director of the portal.

"The change towards the Balearic and Canary Islands property may be a result of the bad press that the Spanish property market has received," he continued. "People looking to get away from the UK winters still see Spain as a great place to holiday. The Canary Islands offer winter sun and a housing market that has not received the negative press that mainland Spain has endured."

"House values in Spain are at an all time low and the increase searches may be a result of both buyers and sellers researching the market."

Nick is right about the British aspect. According to the Association of British Travel Agents, Spain is still the number one holiday destination for Brits, with over 11 million British visitors gracing the shores every year.

This combined with the fact that Brits bought more overseas property per head of population than any other nationality during the boom and you can easily see why the Spanish property market's boom was one of the biggest in the world.

According to many overseas agents, Brits are now being outnumbered by Eastern Europeans, and this is likely at least a part of the reason why the Spanish islands are more popular, because they have traditionally been favoured by Eastern European buyers, according to real estate agents.

This is simply the latest in a succession of reports that Spanish property is regaining popularity with overseas property buyers -- starting from as early as the first quarter of last year. During the last 12-18 months almost all of the UK's top property portals have revealed growth in the popularity of Spanish property, with many of them featuring the country in first or second place on one or more occasions.

The aforementioned ABTA data was in an interview aimed at promoting Turkey, and the fact that British tourism to Turkey is growing at about 20% per year for the last few years, while Spain is stagnating.

However, stagnating is not falling, and with Turkey currently receiving 2 million British visitors per year (German is dominant market), it will be some time before Spain is knocked off the top spot. With Spanish property prices at between 20 and 40 percent below boom levels, and now thought to have bottomed, one must expect its popularity with foreign buyers (especially Brits) to see continued growth this year. .

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has taken over from Thailand as the cheapest long haul destination, because of their consistent low prices. You can get a meal for less than a pound there, and even if you want to treat yourself to the top end eateries it won’t set you back more than about £7. And the exchange rate in Sri Lanka isn't as much affected by the fluctuating pound as it is in Thailand and Malaysia, compared to previous years.

Hungary
Currency: Forint (1 GBP = 317.071 HUF)
Hungary is another destination that’s not quite the bargain it once was. You'll find that prices in the rest of the country haven’t increased as much as they have in Budapest. That said, your money will do you much better in Budapest than it will in other Western European capitals – especially if you head into the side streets and the suburbs for restaurants and pubs.

Thailand

Thai Baht is amongst the currencies the pound had fallen the most against over the last year, so it’s not as dirt cheap as it was, but it’s still up there – especially after visitor numbers dropped after riots in Bangkok in 2009. A new study published today by Globaledge.co.uk reveals the most searched for overseas property destinations by UK internet users. The research looks at over 200,000 property-related searches over the last 100 days from the UK Wordtracker database and groups them by by overseas property location.

Spain is top of the list, accounting for over 10% of total searches, and the list is dotted with numerous Spanish towns and coastal names. Although the obvious locations of Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol are the most popular regions, the popularity of the Canary Islands is the most interesting finding. There is considerable search volume even at local level with Costa Teguise (Lanzarote), Palm Mar (Tenerife), Caleta de Fuste (Fuerteventura) all making the top 101. property for sale in Caleta de Fuste and the rest of Fuerteventura can be found on the BuyIn Fuerteventura web site.

France, Bulgaria and Cyprus are next after Spain for property for sale, but perhaps the biggest surprise is Italy, which appears only at position 21. Italian regions also fair badly with only Umbra, Puglia and Le Marche making the cut. Globaledge.co.uk Director Ashley Rigg says: "In economic terms, Italy has been dubbed the sick man of Europe and buying there is incredibly complicated. It's also expensive in many regions, which is probably why Tuscany doesn't make the list at all."

In the emerging real estate markets, the usual suspects of Bulgaria and Dubai both feature in the top ten and Morocco also does well, coming at number 13. Interestingly, Prague makes it into the top 20 which will come as a surprise to some. "The Czech Republic is one of the best performing economies in Central and Eastern Europe and finance is easily available. It's even possible to get 100% mortgages. News of the opportunities have obviously filtered through to the British public," says Rigg

One location that hasn't been picked up by many consumers is Egypt, which only makes number 57 on the list despite "having some of the best rental yields and growth prospects in the world", according to Rigg. "It has had quite a bit of press recently but it may be the perceived political risks that are turning investors off."

The data was taken from the Wordtracker UK database on 6th May. Our team analysed the most popular 200,000 searches containing the word "property" over the 100 days to 6th May 2008. Step 3
Building your villa

I thought I would touch on something to start that might surprise some of my fellow golfers out there; on the topic of golf equipment.
It’s a known fact that almost every club golfer and many pros use clubs that are not suited to their game. So much research has been done into the swing and into club technology yet the average handicap has remained almost exactly where it was in 1980.
Modern clubs are marketed with slogans like ‘Hit it longer than ever’, ‘biggest ever sweet spot’, ‘anti-slice’ etc and then they become illegal!!
The average 7 iron in 1980 had 38 degrees of loft but that would now be equivalent to an 8 iron in our bag today so it’s just trickery from the big brands to outdo one another in an aggressive market. Drivers have to be longer in length, have bigger heads and steeper face angles to hit the ball further – RUBBISH!! You would all (handicap 5 and above) benefit from a 12 or 13 degree driver with a 43 inch shaft if you would like straighter and longer shots.
Fairway woods nowadays have bigger heads and longer shafts which make ball control from tight fairways extremely complicated for Joe Punter.
Putters sold on shop shelves are also in general far too long for the job required, again short means control and on the greens we’re looking for the perfect stroke with a tool that must be just right for the job. Get club fitted to suit you.
On a positive note one of the greatest modern discoveries to golf has to be the rescue/hybrid club which everyone seems to have these days and now they are being produced at iron length which shows maybe at last the Big Brand names are seeing sense.

Focus On El Cotillo In The North Of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

El Cotillo is a small fishing village popular with Fuerteventura islandlanders and tourist that are “in the know”. The Canarian village is dedicated to the Virgin of Good Travel (Virgin de Buen Viaje) and her name is painted on the cliffs of the old harbour. To the north and south are stunning beaches with sheltered lagoons for swimming or open stretches ideal for the many surfers that visit here. The old harbour area has been rejuvenated lately with a new pedestrian walk that links with the narrow streets between the old properties.
The village is well known for the many fine restaurants which mostly specialise in fresh caught fish from the small fishing fleet that is moored in the new harbour to the south of the village. There are a few small supermarkets and fresh produce can be purchased at the many local shops. A new large supermarket is now open on the outskirts of the village, and a 144 room new hotel has just been completed. To the south of the village is the old fort, now used as a tourist office and art/historical centre, which was built to provide protection from invading British pirates. To the north a museum has been opened in the lighthouse at Punta Toston which concentrates on the village of El Cotillo and its connections with the sea and fishing.
The village has a laid back relaxed atmosphere so don’t expect the flashy, fast paced night life of other resorts on the island, though if this is what you occasionally need then the bustling large resort of Corralejo is just a 20 minute drive away and there is a regular bus connection between the two.
The beach to the south of the village is popular with surfers and if either skill or energy levels prevent you from riding the waves a walk along the cliff path above the beach is worth the effort to see tricks performed by a human on a board and for the view.
The pristine white beaches to the north are lined with sheltered lagoons ideal for children and swimmers. Further north still a track runs from the lighthouse to Corralejo, best attempted in a 4x4 vehicle, but another great walk.
In the evening pick yourself a restaurant with a view west, and with a glass of your favourite tipple sit back and enjoy the sunset and chill.....

At this time of year, it’s hard to imagine that those of us scraping ice off our cars and donning woolly hats could be on a sun lounger within six hours.

But it is possible – and in some cases, reasonable – as long as you avoid the peak travel days (those leading up to Christmas and straight before or after the New Year).

Canary Islands
The first place that most sun-starved Europeans head at this time of year is the Canary Islands, around three and a half hours away from London by plane.

So much is said, and written, about these put-upon islands that does them a huge disservice. Yes, there are sprawling all-inclusive resorts that offer good value holidays and salsa by the pool, but there’s also so much more.

Lanzarote
Take Lanzarote, with its boutique hotels, vineyards and quiet villages – not the image many of us have of the island.

Like its neighbour, Tenerife, the island has a volcanic interior of black sand and lava rock that in places feels like a moonscape, quite other-worldly in fact. It’s great walking country, especially as the temperature in December and January stays at around 15 degrees C, so it’s warm but not too hot if you’re exerting yourself.

If you’re pushing the boat out consider Finca de Las Salinas in Yaiza, an 18th century vineyard property with a pool and spa. The atmosphere is relaxed with colourful, airy rooms and wicker furniture, and as there are only 19 rooms, it never feels busy. There’s tennis, a gym, and mountain biking nearby and the beaches of Papagayo are a short drive away. The restaurant prides itself on using local produce matched with fine Spanish wines, and you should save room for dessert – I hear they’re a knock-out.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to that, try Casa El Morro, self-catering suites that cost from E107 a night. The property is an 18th century mansion in a breathtaking spot between three national parks and close to the vineyards of la Geria.

Madeira
Another island that’s much-maligned is Madeira. Long considered a hotspot for retirees and timeshares, this Atlantic island is actually rather charming, and even has nightlife and culture for the young (and young at heart).

The temperature around the turn of the year is in the low teens, which means you made need a sweater, and even an umbrella at times, but at least you won’t be digging out the snow shovel! One of the coolest hotels on the island is Estalagem da Ponta do Sol on the south coast, only 25 minutes’ drive from Funchal, the capital. It’s a member of the trendy Design Hotels group and has a spa, pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, and fabulous modern décor, as you’d expect.

There’s a chance for birdwatching, hiking, golf and surfing, among the many other activities available, so no excuse not to work up a hunger for the fine dining in front of the fire in the evening. Rooms cost from £45 a night for a five-night stay and the flight to Madeira from London takes three and a half hours.

Cape Verde
My final suggestion is a little further away, but for six hours flying time you’ll get Caribbean-style sandy beaches, no malaria, unlike the Gambia, a popular winter sun spot about the same distance away, and no crowds.

I’m talking about is the Cape Verde islands – you may not have heard of them, but in a few years’ time, I expect they will be very much on our winter sun radar. They are a group of ten islands off the coast of Senegal. Like Madeira, they inhabitants speak Portuguese, but unlike Madeira, they’re an even more toasty 25 C year-round.

There are direct flights to Sal from the UK, the most developed of the islands. If it’s idyllic beaches you’re after, head to Boa Vista, either by flying direct or getting a transfer from Sal. The Parque das Dunas hotel is a good option on Boa Vista overlooking Chaves beach. It has a pool and rooms are split across 28 villas, with prices starting from E63 a night half-board.

If it’s culture you’re after, the island of Santiago offers a dip into African music and food, with some fascinating wildlife in the lush interior. The quality of accommodation is not exceptional on the island, but it’s comfortable.

One of the more popular hotels is Quinta da Montanha, a three-star lodge in the Rui Vaz Mountains, about 15 minutes from the capital, Praia. There’s wonderful walking around the lodge, as you’d expect, and you can book a guided walk with the hotel if you want to learn more about the area and wildlife.

The restaurant offers hearty traditional food, much of it coming from the hotel’s organic garden. Rooms cost from E40 a night, and it’s a great option if you want greenery and mountains from your winter sun, rather than the beaches you’ll find elsewhere on Cape Verde. Either way, the umbrella will be gathering dust and the sunglasses will see the light of day.

Teenage Dutch sailor Laura Dekka, who is attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, has resumed her voyage after departing A Canary Island marina.

Writing on her blog Friday, Dekker said she has already sailed 240 nautical miles (276 statute miles) since leaving Spain's Canary Islands on Wednesday and has 540 nautical miles to go to her next port of call, the Cape Verde islands, off west Africa.

The 15-year-old started her trip from Gibraltar on Aug. 21 in her twin-masted sailboat Guppy and has spent two months in the Canary Islands waiting for the hurricane season to pass.

Strengthening winds are pushing her along at 7.6 knots, she wrote, "so I am making very good progress." She expects to be at sea for a week before seeing the islands.

Dekker's venture stirred an intense debate about whether young people should be allowed to sail the world's oceans alone.

For many the thought of cooking on a BBQ just spells a disaster waiting to happen, but with Fuerteventura’s sunny climate it is a popular way to cook and dine for many who live or own property on Fuerteventura. Try the recipe below if you are a novice to the “Old Barbie” and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to produce a great meal and Wow the guests.

All American Burger
No matter how adventurous you are with your BBQ cooking sometimes nothing beats a good burger.
Ingredients
15g unsalted butter
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon ground cumin
1kg finely minced beef
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 teaspoon chilli sauce
salt & ground black pepper
6 soft white burger buns split &
Lightly char grilled

In a small frying pan melt the butter and gently fry the onion, garlic, oregano and cumin until the onion is translucent and softened. Allow to cool then transfer to a large bowl and mix with the minced beef, olive oil, parsley and chilli sauce. Work with your hands, but do not over work it.

Form the mixture into 6 burgers and char grill them on the BBQ they will need 4-5 minutes each side for medium/rare 6-8 minutes for well done.

Garnish the buns with torn lettuce leaves, thinly sliced tomato, thinly sliced onion rings, sliced pickled gherkins and either tomato sauce, mustard or mayonnaise. Wash down with Canary Island beer!

Gran Tarajal is situated on the South East coast of Fuerteventura in the municipality of Tuineje, and is just a 30 minute drive from the airport in Puerto Rosario. This typical Spanish town is surrounded by hills on three sides giving shelter from the almost constant cooling trade winds for both the tourist enjoying the large safe beach and to the sailors moored in the brand new Gran Tarajal marina.

The town provides all the facilities you would expect for a bustling community that is still mainly residential, but the potential of Gran Tarajal as a tourist resort is now being realised and a huge amount of investment is being brought into the area. The new marina is now complete and provides berths for yachtsmen and the local fishing fleet and the harbour also provides a new ferry service to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

As you would expect in a coastal town fishing plays a big part in community life and this is reflected in the number of great restaurants that provide mouth watering seafood meals and is guaranteed to be fresh. Many of these restaurants are to be found along the promenade which runs along the “Blue Flag” beach. Every September an international deep sea fishing competition is held over a week long period with fishermen and their boats arriving from all the Canarian Islands.

Gran Tarajal is the centre for the islands tomato growing industry with the harbour once being the main port for the export of the produce, now the majority is shipped overseas through Puerto del Rosario.

This part of the coast is known as Costa Calma because of the shelter it affords from the near constant northerly winds making the many beautiful beaches and the sea close to the town very safe. Just to the east of the town is the village of Las Playitas and this part of the coast is the closest point of the Canaries to the African continent.

Each year a festival takes place on the Gran Tarajal beach with a re-enactment of the local population defeating the invasion of English Pirates, known as the Battle of Timasite, which occurred in 1740. Many visitors to the island only see the tourist resorts but Gran Tarajal is well worth a visit. It is an ideal environment for beginners to learn the basic aspects of the game, or the more experienced player to train and improve their skills.

The Queen Elizabeth came into Tenerife around 7-30 in the morning, from the port of Las Palmas, with 2,000 cruise passengers and 960 crew. She will remain in the harbour until six in the afternoon, when she will leave to go to the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma.

She began her maiden voyage on October 12, a day after being christened by the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, in the port of Southampton. This trip consists of a 14-day cruise which takes in Vigo, Lisbon, Las Palmas, Tenerife, La Palma and Funchal.
